The Rally Cry of SUFFS

Kevin, July 7th, 2025

SUFFS is anything but a quiet protest!

If you've ever wondered what it was like to stand on the frontlines of the women's suffrage movement, then SUFFS is the show for you! This two-time Tony Award-winning musical closed its Broadway chapter on January 5, 2025, but the fight is far from over - SUFFS is currently on the road for a U.S. tour!

Who Are the SUFFS?

SUFFS follows the real-life women who lit the fuse on one of the biggest social justice movements in U.S. history - the fight for the right to vote. This show dives into the messy, mighty, and often complicated world of suffragists navigating race, class, and generational divides, all while battling the government and each other.

The story leads right up to the landmark passing of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920 but SUFFS reminds us, the fight for equality is far from over.

Big Names & Big Votes

None other than former Secretary of State and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is waving her banner as a producer. The Broadway run of SUFFS, written by and starring Shaina Taub, assembled a dream team cast including Tony winner Nikki M. James, Tony nominee Jenn Colella, Grace McLean, and Hannah Cruz.

Did You Know?

SUFFS came nearly 100 years after the 19th Amendment was passed in 1920.

Shaina Taub made history at the 2024 Tony Awards as the first woman ever to win both Best Book and Best Score on her own in the same year. She's also only the second woman in Broadway history to write the book, music, lyrics - and star in her own musical.

The show was inspired by the memoir Jailed for Freedom by Doris Stevens, a character in the show.

A critically acclaimed historical drama film, Suffragette (2015), starring Carey Mulligan, garnered $38 million globally - and is essential viewing!

Jenna Bainbridge was only the second wheelchair user ever to appear in a Broadway musical, and the first wheelchair user to originate a role in one. She played Doris Stevens, one of the real-life suffragists featured in the show.

SUFFS focuses on the last seven years of the suffragist movement (19131920), showcasing younger, more radical activists like Alice Paul, who introduced nonviolent civil disobedience tactics to the fight for women's voting rights.
